Conclusion

Adherence to ART medication can help people living with HIV live longer, more productive lives. However, adherence rates have been relatively low among Black MSM. This is attributed to personal, social, and system factors. Several adherence strategies have been proposed to improve adherence among Black MSM. Nevertheless, there is a need for more research on their effectiveness and applicability on a large scale.

Additionally, as discussed, a plethora of factors join hands to bring down the rates of adherence among black MSM. Although little can be done to counter socio-economic disadvantage facing black MSM, issues such as stress and depression can addressed, through therapy. Similarly, illicit drug usage among black MSM can be addressed by the CDC through rehabilitation programs to increase rates of adherence (Darren et al, 2021). Even though we can single out age, alcohol usage, use of drugs and dependence on nicotine as the main issues leading to high levels of non-adherence among black MSM, it is important to note that PLWHA face many other issues that may hinder the proper management of their condition, such as secure housing, means of transport, and access to healthcare.
